Chrysler – Should American taxpayers pay
There is always safety in numbers and this seems true of the big three automakers in the U.S.. Each company has its own problems through the years, but at the end of the day the decline in sales were the result of designing and producing cars that people do not want to buy. Major restructuring is the only way these giants can possibly survive. The problem is that they have the money to do. Or not?
Taking each individual company, Ford seems to be in the strongest position. As one of the market leaders in Europe, Ford seems to have realized the error of their ways. Now the production of some of the most economical cars in its ECOnetic range European, Ford, at least moving in the direction and the money they have asked only be taken if the economy continues its downward spiral.
Unlike General Motors Ford. General Motors is in big trouble. Need the money and needs it NOW. He needs to pay its workforce, it needs to pay its suppliers. In short, it needs to survive. The only ray of hope on the horizon seems to be the Volt, GM's plug in hybrid scheduled for launch in 2010 or 2011. But when using $ 3.1 million per minute 2011 a far away. "They deserve the rescue? Probably not, but it has nowhere else to go and as a result of GM, no doubt, continue along weak political parties, and you do not want to fail on his watch.
So for the last and smallest of the big three, Chrysler. The big difference is that Chrysler is its owner. In 2007, DaimlerChrysler sold a 80.1 percent stake in Chrysler to New York-based private equity firm, Cerberus. Its Chairman John Snow, former U.S. Treasury secretary at the time said "We believe at this particular point in the history of Chrysler, there may be opportunities in the private world, the world of private investment to create more space for growth and expansion." Wait, wait, wait. The private world? The world of private investment? What's gone wrong so badly that in just over a year it was decided that the problems with the firm acquired his company can not be solved by the private sector?
Check out the website of Cerberus and declares that the company has controlling or minority interests in major companies around the world generating more than 100 billion dollars in annual revenue. A large amount of money in anyone's book. Deeper and see a list of several banks to hamburger franchise companies, manufacturers of paper plane leasing companies, companies that undoubtedly continue to make a good profit for its parent company. Can not they use their own money to bail out Chrysler and the jobs offered by Chrysler?
Cerberus paid $ 7.4 million for his role in Chrysler. They obviously expect some return on their investment. Unfortunately, the global economic downturn and the fact that Chrysler has focused on gas guzzling, wasteful, minivan, SUV and vans which means that the return is further away than ever. But surely that's his problem, not the problem for the American taxpayer. It does not really leave a sour taste in the mouth when a private equity firm goes begging for government dollars. And for what? A Cerberus postpone the inevitable and save a few billion dollars along the road. Cerberus bought. Type should Cerberus.
