Mazda Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Wankel Rotary Engine |
Mazda has recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of Mazda's first Wankel rotary engine powered vehicle. It was on May 30, 1967 that Mazda started selling the world's first dual-rotor RE car, the Cosmo Sport, and since then has almost two million rotary-piston engine vehicles.
The first Wankel engine car was the NSU (now famous Audi) Wankel Spider, which was launched in 1964. Other car manufacturers like Mercedes, Rolls-Royce, Norton, Suzuki, General Motors, Citroen, John Deere and Arctic Cat have tried experimenting with the Wankel engine. Some were even able to small runs of the Wankel engine. However, the only manufacturer who was able successfully to the engine was designed by German engineer Felix Wankel in quantities Mazda.
By the end of the 1950s, many car manufacturers around the world have dedicated considerable Research & Development resources for the production of rotary engine (RE), but most have returned because they could not surpass the difficult technical challenges with the technology .It was only Mazda has persevered and eventually could overcome the obstacles and successfully achieved RE mass production. Mazda is also capable of other RE vehicles to the market that the Familia Rotary Coupe, Savanna, RX-7 and Eunos Cosmo.
And of course they know Mazda continuously developed the economy and environmental performance of their vehicles that RE is the reason why they still sell them today.
The creator of the famous Mazda Header Pipe, Mazda has launched its involvement in motor racing in 1968 after the release of the Cosmo Sport when RE cars started participating in car races. Then in 1991, the Mazda 787B made history with the rotary engine when it appeared the only Japanese car ever to claim victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. And since more than 100 to win both the touring car series in Japan and in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) series in the United States was won by RE-equipped racecars.
The RX-8 sports car that was launched in April 2003 was powered by a new generation, naturally aspirated RENESIS rotary engine is compact, powerful and environmentally friendly than its predecessors. British specialist technology magazine Engine Technology International, awarded the RENESIS the most coveted International Engine of the Year award in 2003 and the successive awards for its engine class in 2003 and 2004 to show regard for this engine.
<Br /> Currently, Mazda is progressing with the development of the Hydrogen RE that off no carbon dioxide (CO2) one of the gases responsible for global warming. The development of the hydrogen RE started in 1991 and to date has resulted in the development of the RX-8 Hydrogen RE, which in February 2006 became the world's first hydrogen RE vehicle to be commercially leased. There are seven hydrogen RE vehicles under lease commercial travel the path of Japan.
