The Formula One or the “F1” is held by the “Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile” which is abbreviated to “FIA” as the largest and highest profiled open wheeled auto race in the world. The Formula one Grand Prix is a series of automobile races which take place on several circuits made only for Formula one championship and also in some closed city streets.

The very first championship took place in 1950 at Silverstone in United Kingdom which was won by the Italian super speed racer called Giuseppe Farina. The tradition originally comes from Europe and a half of the races take place there and the UK has produced the highest number of champions which is 12. The first race that was not one of the championships was held in 1946 with its new formula called “Formula One” just after the World War Two. After that, some national championships have been held in South Africa and United Kingdom during the last decades of 60s and 70s. But due to the cost of the races, Non-championship Formula One races ended up in 1983 with its final race.

The Grand Prix championship took place in Singapore at the Thomson Road circuit for the first time in 1961 having been known as “Orient Year Grand Prix”. And after the independence in 1965 it was held as the “Singapore Grand Prix but it did not continue for a long time and ended up in 1973 due to fatal accidents occurred and the increase in traffic on the roads around. During the first ages of this Formula One Grand Prix, the dominating car manufacturers such as Ferrari, Mercedes Benz, and Alfa Romeo had gained a great reputation in Singapore and all over the world for their quality productions with excellent speeds. And in 1953, due to the less number of speedy formula one cars, the championships marked a trend to Formula Two focusing on less powerful and smaller cars. Normally the racing cars are driven at an average speed of 360 km/h and such performance totally depends on their suspension, tires and electronics.

Again Singapore is scheduled to host Formula One World championship from the 28th September in 2008 as a night-time event for the first time in its history. As this is one of the most expensive sports in the world, it would have a significant economic impact attracting millions of fans and television viewers.
